Personal Learning Networks

Personal Learning Networks are something I actually have quite a bit of experience in the deeper I get into the readings. The tech industry evolves so quickly that its impossible for one person to keep up to date on everything. The past two jobs I've been able to set up a network for myself that allows me to keep up to date on information. For example, where I currently work I have different coworkers I can reach out to for information. If I have a questions related to Linux distros I would reach out to John, one of our system administrators who is focused on that product. Likewise if he has questions related to networking he would reach out to me. The creation of this type of network has allowed me to increase my knowledge while improving my financial situation. The ownership and management know that if they give me a task, I will get it completed. Its not because I am overly knowledgeable in my area, in fact most of the time I feel the industry is growing much faster than I can keep up. Its because I know where to go to learn what I need to complete the task. I think that everyone has the potential to create a network like this, as everyone has some type of skill they can teach others. I like to think of it as bartering knowledge.

I apologize for the late addition. I have not found a comfortable pace for my classes yet. Living and working full-time in SLC while driving down to Pocatello for in person classes has been difficult. I hope to settle down into a comfortable groove with my blog writing.

  1. Consider your term bartering knowledge stolen. I like employees like you who admit they don't know it all but know where or to whom to find the answers. As far as evolving with the technology I think that knowing how much to evolve is far more important than trying to keep up with everything. I like to be the master of my trade. The guy even the professionals tun to for advise and that can't happen if I'm a writer artist and nuclear engineer.
Good luck with finding stability !

    1. It is a pretty good feeling when people know they can come to you for answers. It can be a little overwhelming at times. Currently the resident hardware expert on all the companies supported peripherals so always have people over asking questions.

  2. I can relate to you in the fact that the more I get into this class, the more I am enjoying the material. I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I am. I think it's a great advantage for you to already be working in a field where you can see networking at it's finest. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to working with you in the future

  3. It is beneficial that you have a job where your network works for you. Once established, your PLN can only grow and just like you talked about not knowing everything but being able to figure it out, that is all anyone can ask of an employee. I don't work in a position right now where a PLN would do me any good in a work sense, but I do think that PLN's are not just for the work place. Anyone looking for help on any sort of project, work or otherwise, should be able to establish some sort of PLN. I think of do it yourself projects and think of Personal Learning Networks. I think any established network with the same interests would classify as a PLN.
