What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality is a technology that overlays computer generated information and images over our view of the real world. You may be aware of different products and companies working with technology, most notably Google Glass and Pokemon Go. I personally find this technology incredibly fascinating wanted to look at how this type of tech can be used in the classroom.
The picture above shows a really good use of the educational benefits. Applications can be built that show information, link videos, show other works by artists. This type of technology can make it easier for non-traditional students to learn easier by interacting with what they are learning. It has the possibility to decrease training times for on the job training. Imagine being a pilot in training sitting down at the cockpit with hundreds of dials and switches.

Now imagine putting on a pair of glasses, that shows an overhead displaying what each button does. Not only that but you can interact with the button and get more information on it, without ever touching it.
This TED talk by Florian Radke discusses how augmented reality will change education. At 4:25 he shows an excellent example of how this technology can be used by a college student. Can you think of any way this type of technology can help improve your life in your work or personal lives?

Hi Corey,
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty fascinating technology and I think it is definitely beneficial. Specifically, in terms of procedural training procedures. I agree this type of training is going to be huge in later years. It is already huge in companies like NASA, INL, and some types of call centers have a type of simulation setup. But, think about inaditinon to student teaching we can offer simulation teaching. Having this kind of technology can offer a deeper understanding and practice makes perfect. It's like being a parent, you can read about it all day long, but until you have actually done it you have no clue.
Thanks,
Nicole
I agree with you on needing to try it to understand its power. I hope that this tech is fostered in more than just high end tech companies.
DeleteHey Corey,
ReplyDeleteAugmented Reality is a great teaching tool, but like any other technology it will take a while to refine and adjust the cost to where it will get used everywhere. I am just glad they made a better use for it than for Pokémon. Watching grown people chasing imaginary creatures they only they can see on their smart phone is just a waste of advanced technology.
The audio version of this tool is used in museums and even at my city’s park where you can take an audio tour of all the different species of trees planted in the park with your smart phone. Google maps has done similar applications by combining maps, satellite pictures, and 3-D street level pictures to display what the building looks like that you are looking for and the scenery alone the way. I hope to see some more of this technology put to good use like Toyota and GM are trying check out these videos.

I wouldn't say that it was a waste of advanced technology. The social impacts that game had were immense. You had many people from all walks of life outside and exercising and communicating with each other. In the age where kids are inside playing video games, they were instead out and about catching Pokemon.
DeleteHi Corey! How incredible is this? I know personally as an online learner, and distance learner, the struggle of being involved can prevent fully engaged learning and cause aggravation more times than not. This tool would be successful and beneficial for learners specifically in courses like this, where there is so much to learn, and not as much hands on to make it easier. Thanks for sharing this tool and explaining how it could be utilized as well!
ReplyDeleteIt is exciting, there is so much innovation going on right now. I imagine that we can't even fathom the impact it will have 10 years from now.
DeleteI Love this post. I have a question though. How did you create a hypelink that was just one word? Have you seen Zspaces? They have kits that you can set up for youth and adult learners. Pretty cool!
